New Zealand Weekly Update #95

12th of August to 18th of August 2024

Approximate reading time: 5 minutes

Lets get it started

Sunday afternoon, back in time for a weekly update and some news from the other side of the world. And what a week fellas. What a week full of what the fuck! It all started, as said in my last update, with news from immigration. With news about my application being about to be declined again. Due to some formal mistakes which had been and still are out of my control. What a shitshow. I was shocked. Sitting next to my housemate, having breakfast and we were about to head up the mountains for skiing and a nice day off and out and about. But instead of happy days, I got the news anthathe lifts hhadbeen closed due to heavy wind. Leck!
After one or two minutes of shock and what the fuck statements in my head I already have made plans and took actions on how to respond and how to react. I got in touch with a lawyer, with immigration itself, with my immigration advisor as well as with my employer. And after only two days a plan has been made and is about to take action. I have done everything I could have done. Everything that has been inside my control. From now on, it is time to wait, hope, and be and stay faithful. Everything else would be a waste of time, energy and focus. For now, it is time to sleep in, to relax and to not worry too much. Things will sort out, and things will be solved. And they will happen as they are supposed to happen.

Late-night road trip

While taking all actions for residency, I went to Sammy Friday evening for some dinner, a movie and a chilled Saturday morning with frisbee gold and some good coffee. As she picked me up from Wanaka (my car is still shit) she told me that she does not feel very good but it should be alright. So we made our way to Hawea. Great dinner, great movie and a wine. However, she was not able to sleep. Went up again and again and again. Until 1.30, as we decided that it is not worth it to suffer and that we should make our way to the hospital. Welcome to Wanaka! No hospital open during the evening / night. No after-hour pharmacy sercive, no late-night emergency service. You have to make your way to Queenstown, wich is almost a 90 minute drive from Hawea. A 90 minute drive! I was wondering what would happen if you are in a very serious condition. And between you and a life-saving action lie 90 minutes (minimum as the ambulance also has to pick you up). This is insance and one of the challenges here in this area. There are plans to build a hospital in Wanaka and this is more than necessary. As we talked to some people in the little hospital that night and three more people made their way also from Hawea to Queenstown, two of them with the same condition as Sammy. Well, I think we arrived at the hospital around 2.30 in the morning and left around 4.30. One of the advantages of Queenstown? A 24/7 Mc Donalds. I am not a big fan of Big M, but this time it was great to have. Hot burger, hot coffee and a long drive back to Wanaka. Over the crown range. Icy, dark as and being tired as fuck. But we made it back. 6am, time to sleep. And I fell asleep pretty quick. Yeah na, all good!

What else to say?

10AM, phone was ringing. Anna, calling me to check in if we are all good. Yeah nah, we are. And tired as. And I was not able to fall asleep anymore. So I did some chores, dishes and some breakfast for Sammy and my housemate Sophie. And saturday evening, I supported Sophie, my great housemate (with the cat Winnie, I have told you that she peed on my two weeks after I have moved in into the new place) with a function. Almost 100 people, music, drinks and banter. Until late evening. Back home, couch, movie, a cold drink and I fell asleep. And I slept until 12 this day. I have never slept soo long while being in New Zealand. Well, it has been quite a week with some crazy news, challenges, but also some amazing support and lookouts. Things shake me around quite a bit recently. but so does the washing machine with the laundry before you take out fresh, warm and clean clothes 🙂
